Wu Yanni and XIE Zhenye named Sustainability ambassadors for Shanghai Diamond League

As part of its long-term vision, the Shanghai Diamond League is committed to integrating ESG principles (Environmental, Social, and Governance)  into the organization of the event. These principles focus on reducing environmental impact, promoting social responsibility, and ensuring transparent and responsible event management.

The event’s sustainability efforts are guided by Athletics for a Better World, the sustainability programme of World Athletics. This framework supports international athletics events in implementing sustainable practices and creating positive social impact through sport.

In practice, the Wanda Shanghai/Keqiao Diamond League is introducing a range of initiatives focused on green energy, waste reduction, sustainable mobility, and environmentally responsible venue operations. The event is also encouraging the use of digital communication systems to reduce paper consumption and promoting public transportation and low-carbon travel options for spectators and participants.

Tournament Director Ellen van Langen highlighted the importance of combining elite sport with environmental responsibility.

“We believe that sporting excellence and sustainability should go hand in hand. The future of sport is not only about breaking records on the track, but also about setting new standards for responsibility and positive impact off the track,” said Van Langen.

This year, Chinese athletes Wu Yanni and Xie Zhenye have been appointed as Sustainability Ambassadors for the event. In this role, they will help raise awareness around environmentally friendly and socially responsible choices, both within athletics and in the wider community.

By combining world-class competition with meaningful sustainability initiatives, the Shanghai Diamond League aims to inspire not only through athletic achievement, but also through its commitment to building a more sustainable future for sport and society.
