Werro Rewrites History In Stockholm As Diamond League Heads To Oslo

The Wanda Diamond League delivered another unforgettable afternoon in Stockholm on Sunday, with world-leading performances, dramatic upsets, and one of the fastest women’s 800m races ever run.

Swiss middle-distance star Audrey Werro stole the headlines at Stockholm’s Olympic Stadium, producing a sensational run of 1:53.99 to win the women’s 800m. The performance shattered the Diamond League record and moved Werro to third on the all-time world list, confirming her status as one of the sport’s brightest rising stars.

While Werro was rewriting the record books, the biggest surprise of the day came in the men’s pole vault. Home favourite and world record holder Armand “Mondo” Duplantis suffered a rare defeat, ending an extraordinary winning streak. In front of a packed Swedish crowd, Duplantis was unable to clear 6.00m, allowing Australia’s Kurtis Marschall to claim victory with 5.90m. It marked Duplantis’ first Diamond League loss in years and provided one of the shocks of the season.

Elsewhere, the meeting showcased the depth of talent currently competing on the Diamond League circuit. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden powered to victory in the women’s 100m, Kenny Bednarek impressed in the men’s 200m, and 17-year-old American Cooper Lutkenhaus delivered a breakthrough performance to win the men’s 800m in a season-best 1:42.70.

Shot put star Jessica Schilder delivered a dominant performance at Stockholm’s Olympic Stadium, claiming victory with a throw of 20.89m. The reigning world champion from the Netherlands comfortably outdistanced her rivals with the second-longest mark of her career, finishing well ahead of Americans and Canadians in the field.

Schilder arrived in Stockholm in outstanding form after breaking her Dutch record in Shanghai in May with a massive 21.09m effort. On that occasion, she also finished ahead of her main competitors, Chase Jackson and Sarah Mitton, who once again occupied the remaining podium positions.

With Stockholm now complete, attention immediately turns to Oslo and the historic Bislett Games, where another world-class field is set to continue the momentum of an already thrilling Diamond League season.

Oslo Awaits

The Bislett Games on June 10 will feature one of the strongest fields assembled anywhere in athletics this year, with seven Olympic champions and twelve world champions confirmed to compete.

Norwegian superstar Karsten Warholm will once again be one of the main attractions as he competes in front of a home crowd at Bislett Stadium. The Olympic champion has built a reputation for producing spectacular performances in Oslo and will be eager to deliver another memorable display for the Norwegian fans.

The men’s pole vault promises to be another major highlight as Duplantis looks to bounce back immediately from his Stockholm disappointment. The Swede has often used Oslo as a launching pad for record-breaking performances and will be motivated to return to winning ways.

Middle-distance racing will also take centre stage, with world-class fields assembled across the men’s 800m and Dream Mile. Combined with strong sprint, hurdle and field event line-ups, Oslo is shaping up to be one of the standout meetings of the 2026 Diamond League season.

After records, breakthroughs and surprises in Stockholm, the stage is set for another spectacular evening of athletics in Norway as the race for Diamond League points and momentum towards the global championships continues.
