Double Diamond League Record
It was a night to remember for those who had secured tickets to Lausanne's Athletissima in 2017. AS Diamond Trophy and World Championship favourites that year, Wayde Van Niekerk and Mariya Lasitskene were the headline stars in any case, but few expected them to light up Lausanne in quite the way they did.
First, Van Niekerk showed why he was the undisputed man to beat over 400m, as he tore up a very competitive field to pick up a resounding victory. Chasing down Isaac Makwala on the final bend, the South African showed his pure class as he eased over the line in 43.62 to set a new Diamond League record.
As if one record wasn't enough, the crowd were soon treated to a second. Lasitskene, in the middle of an extraordinary run of victories and on her way to the Diamond Trophy, was on fire even by her own standards in Lausanne.
Having left her competitors far behind her, she finished the night attempting 2.06m. As she soared over the bar, she set the second Diamond League record of the night, and muscled her way into the all-time top five in the women's high jump.
