The Wanda Diamond League delivered a great show in Oslo on Wednesday evening, where a sensational breakthrough performance from American teenager Cooper Lutkenhaus stole the headlines and added fresh intrigue to the road ahead.
At the historic Bislett Stadium, the 17-year-old produced the race of his life to defeat Olympic and world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi in a dramatic men’s 800m showdown. Lutkenhaus clocked a world-leading 1:42.08, edging the Kenyan by just one hundredth of a second after a thrilling sprint to the finish line.
The victory confirmed the emergence of Lutkenhaus. Having already impressed earlier in the season, Lutkenhaus showed remarkable composure against one of the strongest middle-distance fields assembled this year. As Wanyonyi launched his trademark move entering the final lap, the American stayed attached before surging into the lead with 200 metres remaining. The Olympic champion fought back all the way to the line, but Lutkenhaus timed his finish perfectly to secure a memorable win.
Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo continued his strong form with a commanding victory in the men’s half-lap event, running 19.84 to defeat a talented field that included Australian teenage sensation Gout Gout. The Botswanan looks increasingly sharp as the season progresses and remains one of the key attractions on the Diamond League circuit.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Alison dos Santos delivered another statement performance. The Brazilian held off hometown favorite Karsten Warholm to win in 46.89, demonstrating once again why he remains one of the most consistent performers in the sport.
Distance running also produced standout moments. Ethiopia’s Addisu Yihune claimed victory in the men’s 5000m with a world-leading 12:47.62, while fellow Ethiopian Freweyni Hailu topped the women’s 3000m in another world-leading performance.
The women’s sprint events featured more championship pedigree, with Olympic champion Julien Alfred powering to victory in the 100m despite a slow start, reinforcing her status as one of the favorites wherever she races this season.
The the Diamond League campaign continues on June 19th in Doha.
