Faith Kipyegon will open her 2026 track and field season at the Shanghai Diamond League in Keqiao on May 16, stepping up to the 5000m for her first race of the year. The 3x Olympic champion and 5x world champion, best known for her dominance in the 1500m, continues to expand her range as she builds toward another major season.
Kipyegon enters the new season on the back of a remarkable 2025 campaign, where she once again underlined her status as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of all time. A season in which she won her 5th 1500m world title and where she challenged herself in an audacious Breaking4 moon shot attempt on the Mile, together with her longtime partner NIKE. That momentum now carries into 2026, with Shanghai offering the first glimpse of what could be another historic year on the track.
Shanghai will offer an early test of Kipyegon’s endurance and speed over the longer distance, where she has already proven herself among the world’s best.

Speaking ahead of her season opener, Kipyegon expressed excitement about returning to competition and embracing the challenge of the 5000m. Shanghai marks the first step in what promises to be an inspiring journey on the track.
Why did you choose the 5000m in Shanghai to start your season?
Faith: I wanted to challenge myself early in the season and build strength. The 5000m is a great distance for that, and Shanghai is always a fantastic place to compete. I like coming to China and the timing fits perfectly into my program.
How has your preparation been leading into this race?
Faith: Training has gone very well. I’ve had really good months of training in Kenya where I focused on endurance and consistency, so I can say that I feel strong and ready to race again.
You are most known for your success in the 1500m but what excites you about the 5000m?
Faith: The 5000m pushes me in a different way. It’s about patience, rhythm, and knowing when to make your move. I enjoy that challenge.
What are your goals for this race in Shanghai?
Faith: My goal is to run a strong race, test my fitness, and start the season on a positive note.
What can fans expect from you this season?
Faith: I want to keep improving, stay consistent, and give my best in every race. Last year showed me that I can continue to push my limits, that I enjoy challenges outside my comfort zone. And I need to continue improving as we are currently racing with such a strong group of girls in every race. I have still lots to prove so I’m excited for what’s ahead.
